FROM THE SCHOOLYARD TO PHYSICAL HABITS: NGUYEN SIEU PRIMARY STUDENTS LEARN WELL AND LIVE HEALTHY EVERY DAY

News Friday, 18/09/2026

Education is not only about enriching knowledge, but also about building a physical foundation, active habits, and a positive mindset for every student. At Nguyen Sieu Primary School, physical education and school sports are highly valued and organized regularly in various age-appropriate forms. Alongside the standard Physical Education curriculum under the National Education Program, students are introduced to and practice both badminton and basketball.

The message regarding the role of school sports is currently being emphasized at the national level. At the 80th Anniversary Ceremony of Vietnam Sports Day, General Secretary To Lam called for promoting regular physical exercise and stressed the importance of enhancing physical education and school sports. According to news reports, students need "genuine physical activity," learning fundamental physical skills and having opportunities to access various sports suitable for their age, physique, and interests—among which badminton and basketball were specifically mentioned. Notably, the key message highlighted at the event was: "A strong nation begins with healthy children. A strong sports movement begins in schools."

When Physical Education Class Is the Time Students Look Forward To

Footage from the reportage at Nguyen Sieu Primary School shows a vibrant active space right on campus. On the court, students practice with rackets and shuttles, getting familiar with badminton techniques. In another section, students practice basketball with drills on dribbling, passing, and ball handling. The highlight is not just the addition of more sports options, but more importantly, that students engage in real physical activity: running, jumping, hand-eye coordination, body control, interacting with peers, and gradually mastering movement skills. As a result, a physical education class becomes far more than just fulfilling a curriculum requirement. It is a time for children to release energy, build agility, endurance, and coordination, while fostering teamwork, discipline, self-confidence, and the joy of physical activity.

Following the Ministry’s Curriculum While Creating More Movement Opportunities for Students

This orientation aligns with the tasks for the 2026–2027 school year set by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET). In its official guidance under the section "Physical Education and School Health," MOET requires schools to effectively organize physical education classes and sports activities, focusing on physical training and student healthcare. At the same time, schools are expected to review their teaching staff, facilities, courts, and equipment to organize elective sports under the General Education Program that match students' needs, aspirations, and school conditions. At Nguyen Sieu Primary School, this spirit is demonstrated through concrete actions: students receive full instruction under MOET's curriculum while gaining access to accessible sports like badminton and basketball. This diversity is especially meaningful at the primary level, where each child may have different strengths and interests. Some are thrilled by a shuttlecock rally, while others enjoy dribbling and shooting a basketball into the hoop. By experiencing various forms of exercise, children have a better chance of discovering a sport they love and maintaining it in the long run.

Making Movement a Natural Part of School Life

According to an article on Vietnamnet, the General Secretary highlighted the broader goal of building an "active society," where physical exercise becomes a daily habit and lifestyle rather than a short-term campaign. For children, that habit can start with very relatable moments: an inspiring physical education class, a successful rally over the net, a smoother dribble than yesterday, or simply the joy of running and playing sports with friends.

At Nguyen Sieu Primary School, sports are not on the sidelines of the educational journey. Physical activity is a seamless part of each school day—enabling students to learn with a healthy body, grow up with confidence and discipline, and gradually build an active lifestyle.
